Why Market Breadth Tells a Deeper Story

An index can rise even when most stocks fall. This surprising fact explains why serious investors look beyond headline numbers. When people ask about Today Sensex levels, they usually want to know whether the market is strong or weak. A single figure rarely answers that fully. Pre-market indicators such as SGX Nifty Live can suggest direction at the opening, but they say little about how many companies are actually participating. Market breadth fills this gap by measuring the width of a rally or decline, and understanding it can protect you from misleading impressions.

What Breadth Really Measures

Breadth compares the number of advancing issues with the number of declining ones. If two thousand shares advance and five hundred decline, it is a positive breadth. On the contrary, if the index rises but the number of declining issues dominates the advancing ones, the index is being driven by relatively few issues and can reverse quickly. Advance-decline ratio, the number of new fifty-two-week highs and lows, and the percentage of issues trading above their two-hundred-day average are some other ways to measure breadth.

The Weight Factor in Indian Indices

Indian indices are free-float market capitalisation weighted indices. So, the large private banks, a few software companies, and a few big conglomerates have a disproportionately large impact on the index. On a particular day, if these big stocks rise while mid-cap and small-cap stocks fall, someone holding diversified stocks in his portfolio might feel cheated as his personal investment might have fallen while the market has risen. It is then useful to look at equal-weighted indices or mid-cap or small-cap indices apart from the main large-cap indices.

Using Breadth for Taking Decisions

A rising breadth during an upmarket is a good breadth for investors who want to stay invested, as it means that apart from a few stocks, most others are also rising. A falling advance-decline ratio in a rising market is a signal that the market is being led by relatively few stocks. This is not a signal to sell but it is a signal to pause and rethink your buying strategy. You can look to tighten stops or shift some money into sectors that are doing well and rethink the value of the stocks that you already own. Breadth is a useful guide even during a down market. If every stock is making new lows every day during a downtrend, it is a signal that the selling is gathering momentum and the market is likely to keep going down. Breadth is just one tool and should be used along with price movements of the broader market indices, volumes, and earnings.

The Balanced Point of View

Use breadth as a part of your weekly routine to judge how the market is performing. Observe sector rotations and whether the mid-caps and small-caps are rising along with the large caps on rallies. Breadth should not be used as a day-to-day decision-making tool. Breadth is likely to fluctuate a lot from day to day depending on the news. After a few weeks, the overall trend emerges. Breadth should also not be used as a magical indicator that can predict the future with accuracy. It is more important to cultivate the habit of questioning. Instead of getting happy that the market has risen, ask yourself who has risen, why, and how much, and whether your investments are truly benefiting from the rise in the market. This habit of questioning is a good way to think about breadth and is more valuable to an investor than trying to use it as a crystal ball.
